Tam Dao Retreat House Lets 52 Pine Trees Set the Plan

On a 2,000-square-metre hillside in Tam Dao, Idee architects preserves every mature pine and treats the existing forest as the framework of the retreat.

Idee architects organized Tam Dao Retreat House around what was already standing. On a 2,000-square-metre hillside plot, all 52 mature pine trees were retained, allowing the forest—rather than a cleared footprint—to establish the project’s basic spatial order.

Tam Dao’s cool mountain microclimate makes that decision more than visual. The house takes its cues from the slope, trunks and canopy, bringing domestic space into an established landscape instead of replacing it.

The approach gives the retreat a clear hierarchy: fixed natural elements first, architectural rooms second. It reads less as a single object placed in the forest than as a measured occupation of the spaces between trees.

Completed in 2023, the project turns preservation into a design method. Its identity comes from accepting the site’s mature structure and building carefully around it.
