Monumental Painted Wood Carvings by Jiang Miao Center Mindfulness

The spiral is one of the most ubiquitous, universal symbols. Or perhaps it is more apt to describe the motif as mimicked from nature, where it occurs in the form of seashells, flowers, and curling waves. From Neolithic stone carvings at Newgrange in Ireland to swirling motifs on prehistoric pottery discovered in Thailand, the spiral represents growth, the cycles of life, and evolution. Sometimes two or more interlink, and other times they emerge from an endless line.

For artist Jiang Miao, Eastern philosophy is a touchstone. “The spiral symbolizes life, time, and the cyclical order of the universe, while color becomes a vessel for invisible energy beyond the material world,” says Whitestone Gallery, which presents the artist’s solo exhibition, Spiral of Energy.

Several series are represented in the show, including Heavenly Eyes, Mindfulness, Origin, and Taoist Trinity and the Self. “Heavenly Eyes proposes a perspective beyond ordinary human vision, contemplating the essence of existence and the order of the universe, while Mindfulness explores the nature of life through introspection and awakened consciousness,” the gallery says. Taoist Trinity and the Self is all tondos and emphasizes perpetualness. They can also be monumental: one reaches about seven feet in diameter.

Miao meticulously carves intricate textures into wood panels, then applies vibrant acrylic paint to create a sensorial movement, contrast, and glow. Both the approach and result are inherently concerned with time and concentration, spirituality and mindfulness.
