Justinas Jakubovskis creates a 3D printed case for the handheld gaming device Steam Deck, transforming it into a work laptop. The full-size device fits into the case, and the designer adds a kickstand and a ventilation flap to avoid overheating. The 3D printed Steam Deck case can accommodate either a Pebble Keys 2 K380s keyboard or a Pebble 2 Combo with a mouse. The user just slides the keyboard below the Steam Deck and uses the mouse out of the case.

The designer has printed his own case in PET-G, a thermoplastic polyester for 3D printing, with black parts made of thermoplastic polyurethane. For those who want to produce their own 3D printed Steam Deck case, Justinas Jakubovskis has uploaded all the files across different platforms. In this way, users can make, and even customize, their own portable thermoplastic shell for their device. A heads-up that the designer has only made the case. This means that the other parts, including the keyboard and mouse, are on the users.

From portable PC gaming device to work laptop

In the documents that Justinas Jakubovskis has uploaded, the designer also notes the other materials users may need should they want to make their own 3D printed Steam Deck case. Aside from the specific keyboard brand, they can also purchase their own cushioning to protect the device from scratches and dents. They can also throw in rubber pads for the legs of the kickstand to prevent the case from slipping (depending on the surface). The Steam Deck is a portable PC gaming device designed to be console-like.

It brings back the days of handheld consoles, but this time, it comes with a bigger screen and a powerful processor. It has a WiFi connection and can last between 8 and 12 hours of continuous playing, depending on the model. Steam Deck says that people can use it as a PC when docked ‘because it is one.’ But it only has trackpads, thumbsticks, buttons, and triggers. With Justinas Jakubovskis’ portable 3D printed case, the Steam Deck can have its own keyboard and mouse, allowing the gamers to switch from playing games to finishing their tasks at work anywhere.
